praise from choreographers

“David Schulman is a musician and composer of the highest order AND an incredibly generous, deeply invested collaborator. We commissioned him to create the score for our site-specific choreographic work A Curious Invasion/Middlebury in the fall of 2012 and are in the process of creating a new collaborative work for our dance theater company to be performed at the Kennedy Center. David consistently composes the most beautifully elegant, spiritually alive music to perfectly illuminate a dance in its musicality and larger meaning. His music is infectiously rhythmic, wondrously melodic and astonishingly complex.”

David Schulman’s soaring electronic violin invites you inside a delicious soundscape, luring you from static to ecstatic, from passive to active participant in artistic exchange. As a collaborator, David meets you right in the heart of the creative process, neither dominating nor withdrawing, but entering fully into the risk-taking exchange of art making.”

“The score of “Figure Eight” (Parts 1 and 2) grew out of a dynamic collaborative dialogue between the multi-talented David Schulman and myself. The musical themes and variations that emerged through the creative process richly nourished the content and form of the choreography, the live performance of the dancers, and finally the ears of the audiences who were able to see the shows. The music David created for “Figure Eights” is layered with detailed memories of the past and immediate sensations of the present … Unbelievably gorgeous music.”

swim2“David Schulman and I recently collaborated on an evening length dance piece entitled “Heartstrings & Shoestrings,” which was performed for two consecutive weekends at the Dance Exchange in Takoma Park MD. He composed a number of evocative original pieces of music for the show in addition to adding depth and dimension to recorded music we used for the evening by playing his music on top of the recorded selections. David’s musical relationship to the dancers and the dance work was sinuous.  The music and dance came together smoothly and David was very attuned to the needs of the dance work.  He tried a variety of musical ideas and would then go back and finely tune his compositions so they fit the pacing, rhythms, and mood of the dance work. With his electric violin and looping machine, he was able to easily create richly layered soundscapes. David Schulman is by far the best musical collaborator I have ever worked with, I cannot sing enough praises for him!

David is an amazing collaborator. Sensitive, thoughtful, and outrageously talented. He listened carefully to me when I explained my ideas. Then he translated those ideas through his musical-mind and out through that astounding violin. The results were extra-ordinary. I’d work with David again in a second.
